Low-Fat Dry Dog Food: Benefits, Limits and How to Choose

Low-fat dog food can be useful for some dogs, but fat is an essential nutrient and should not be restricted without a reason. The goal is an appropriate diet—not the lowest number on the shelf.

Which dogs may need less fat?

A veterinarian may recommend fat restriction for some dogs with pancreatitis, hyperlipidaemia or particular gastrointestinal conditions. A calorie-controlled food may also help with weight loss, although “low fat” and “low calorie” are not always the same thing.

Why healthy dogs still need dietary fat

Fat supplies concentrated energy, essential fatty acids and helps the body use fat-soluble vitamins. Puppies, working dogs, underweight animals and pregnant or nursing dogs can have higher energy needs. Unnecessary restriction may make it difficult to meet those needs.

Read calories as well as percentages

Guaranteed-analysis percentages are reported by weight and can be difficult to compare across foods. Ask for calories per cup and, when medically important, fat on a dry-matter or calorie basis. Your veterinarian can help interpret the label and set a daily portion.

What to look for in the food

  • A complete and balanced statement for the correct life stage.
  • Enough digestible protein to help preserve lean muscle.
  • Calorie density that fits the weight-management or medical plan.
  • Fibre at a level the dog tolerates comfortably.
  • Clear manufacturer nutrition and quality-control information.

Treats can undermine the plan

Cheese, fatty meat, table scraps and many commercial treats can add substantial fat and calories. Include every extra in the daily allowance and use approved low-fat rewards when the diet is prescribed for a medical condition.

Monitor the response

Track body weight, body condition, stool quality, appetite and energy. Contact a veterinarian for repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, a hunched posture, marked lethargy or refusal to eat, as these may require prompt assessment.
