How Much Dry Food Should I Feed My Dog? Portion Guide

The correct amount of kibble is measured in calories, not simply cups. Two foods can look similar but contain very different calories per gram, and two dogs of the same weight may have different needs because of age, activity, body condition and health.

Use the package guide as a starting point

Find the dog’s current healthy weight on the feeding chart and check whether the amount is per day or per meal. The guide is an estimate, not a prescription. Divide the daily total by the number of meals.

Measure accurately

A kitchen scale is more consistent than a household cup, especially for small dogs where a small scoop error can represent many extra calories. Record the daily gram amount and include food used for training.

Count treats and toppers

Extras can quietly add a large share of daily energy. Keep treats modest and reduce the main meal when necessary, while ensuring complete food remains the foundation of the diet.

Let body condition guide adjustments

You should generally be able to feel the ribs with a light covering, see a waist from above and an abdominal tuck from the side. Recheck weight and body condition every few weeks. If the dog is gaining or losing unexpectedly, adjust gradually and seek veterinary advice.

Factors that change calorie needs

  • Growth, pregnancy and nursing.
  • Neutering status and individual metabolism.
  • Daily activity, work and climate.
  • Age-related muscle and activity changes.
  • Medical conditions and medications.

When professional help matters

Puppies, very small dogs, athletes and dogs on weight-loss or therapeutic plans benefit from a precise veterinary target. Sudden appetite or weight changes can indicate illness and should not be managed only by changing the scoop.
