Mask leaks are frustrating, especially when they wake you repeatedly. Pillow contact is only one possible cause, but the right shape can reduce the pressure and movement that push a mask out of position during side sleeping.

Start with the mask itself
Confirm the cushion is the correct size, clean and replaced according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Tightening straps too much can be as uncomfortable as leaving them loose. Your equipment provider can check the fit while you are in your usual sleep position.
Then review pillow contact
Look for a side cut-out or edge that lets the mask sit without being pushed upward. Keep the hose supported and make sure the pillow is not collapsing around the face. Small adjustments are easier to evaluate than changing several variables at once.

Track patterns
Note whether leaks happen only after turning, at a particular pressure or with a particular mask. Persistent high leak, pain or skin breakdown deserves a clinical review. A pillow is a comfort aid, not a replacement for mask fitting or therapy monitoring.
