Say Goodbye to Mask Marks and Leaks: CPAP Comfort Tips

Mask marks and leaks can make CPAP feel harder than it needs to be. The solution is usually a combination of correct mask fit, gentle strap tension, clean equipment and a pillow that leaves the mask enough room to move naturally.

Fit before you tighten

Follow the mask maker’s fitting instructions while lying in your usual sleep position. Over-tightening can increase pressure marks and may deform the cushion. Replace worn cushions and contact your equipment provider if the size no longer feels right.

Create clearance at the pillow

A contoured side edge can stop the pillow from pressing into the mask. Route the hose so it does not pull when you turn, and consider a soft washable cover if friction or heat irritates the skin.

Protect the skin

Wash and dry the mask as directed, avoid applying oily products under the cushion and ask your clinician about a compatible barrier if needed. Persistent redness, sores or swelling should be assessed rather than covered up.
